Red Bulls Augmented Racing Game is here people! If you purchase 8.4 oz cans of Red Bull (available in sugar free and regular), players can line them up to build their own custom digital race tracks. Red Bull Augmented Racing is the first-ever mobile gaming app for iPhone and wifi-enabled iPod Touch! “You don’t just play the game, you create it,” said Brian Vickers, driver of the #83 Red Bull Racing Team Toyota. “This is a new way for fans to further connect with the Red Bull Racing Team and enjoy the race experience on a handset.”
Using Advanced Sensor Fusion, motion data is collected from an iPhone or iPod Touch camera, which identifies visual points of interest and then tracks the movements of those points between each frame of video. Visual recognition of the Red Bull cans is done with the camera using natural feature identification powered by metaio. The game was developed in conjunction with Circ.us, which is a leader in uncovering remarkable uses for gameplay, animation, 3D and cross-platform creative execution.

Bad idea. why building a race track via scanning cans????? you can easily sketch a track with your finger on the touchscreen….
First of all, Red Bull does not want to sell you your fingers, but cans. It´s planned to be yet another buying impulse. I assume. But I do not want to be cynical, there´s of course many – and easier – ways of creating race tracks. Even with computervision, you could i.e. draw a track, scan it and play it. But as soon as you try it out, you´ll recognize, that “buliding” a race track with cans is, well, “buliding” it. It´s playful to physically arrange and re-arrange, a true haptic experience – connected to the virtual one. Anyway, your feedback is apreciated!
