Markers Are so Yesterday

Even more, because yesterday I was already dealing with object recognition and visual overlays in real time. But when it comes to mobile augmented reality we have to cool down a little. The processing power still is one of the limiting factors. Nevertheless we are ready to roll out applications like AR print campaings, where we can track images and not change the layout of print products. This has many implications for the business model, the layout quality and of course the “WOW” factor. Talking about business models, did you know that the toolkit which was used for the movie below is the only existing SDK in the market at the moment offering full mobile augmented reality capabilities? Of course including feature based tracking on mobile devices. See.

Impressive, although I’ve installed the S60 SDK demo on the mobile page (http://www.metaio.com/products/mobile/) on two Nokia phones and can’t get the markerless tracking to work. I assume it uses the image of the camera in the SDK manual? Or is it the car in on the video example? If so, where can I find that?

Hey Dylan, thanks for the feedback. The markerless function is not yet integrated in the demo version. If you want to try this, please send an e-Mail to info(at)metaio.com for your request. The guys will help you out… Cheers, Jan.

    Hi,
I am planning to implement a demo AR application on Nokia N97. I’ve tried the different pointers available on the subject, but have not been able to make my first application work.

I badly need your help in guiding me to
    1. Get a sample code
    2. Build it
    3. Deploy it on Nokia N97.

    Please help.

    Thanks.

  3. I am wondering why markers are needed. Why can’t you just use a dollar bill? Everyone has a dollar bill for the most part. Not everyone has a printer and even if you have a printer, why go to the trouble of printing out a marker when you just bypass all of that by finding the youtube video of what is supposed to happen?

just look for ‘moneydetector’ on iPhone App-Store. It’s a rough prototype only so far (also done by metaio) but shows the concept of using image tracking to a $1 bill :-)
