As a child I loved running around the “Deutsches Museum”, pressing the buttons on every exhibit. The speciality, besides its size and its profound scientific apporach, of this museum in Munich is, let´s say, interactivity. They simulate the genesis of waves, show how ships swim – and sink, perform a high-voltage show with a Faraday Cage; to keep it short: you push the button and the show begins. And this playful apporach, giving the visitor a role, turning a spectator into an actor, makes kids (and by the way adults too) want to know things. Gaining knowledge is an active process. Guess what! Of course there are projects with Augmented Reality in a museum…

That´s what the norwegian guys say on their website about the solution: “Augmented Reality provides museums with powerful storytelling opportunities that have never been seen before. It gives visitors thrilling, memorable and inspiring experiences, far beyond anything they could have imagined.”

Magic Look

June 20, 2007

Here´s another fine example of augmenting the real world: a magic book where virtual content is added to the live-video, taken from the real book someone is flipping through. The usage is intuitive, the effect is stunning. Of course you could add sound files too. If “words don´t come easy…”, what about a blasting animation?

This TV report, provided with material from HITLab in NZ, gives a nice overwiew about Augmented Reality and its application fields. Let me quote: “… and it won´t be long before Augmented Reality is an everyday part of the real world.” I agree on that.

Augmented Fun

June 1, 2007

Who said rehearsals are boring? No way! Especially when augmented reality plays a role. The video was recorded at the preparation of a road show we produced for the new Scion Xd. The car actually comes out in 2008 and was presented virtually on a real stage – for the first time in live-communication history. It is no coincidence, that it was one of the most innovative automobile companies to recognize the power of augmented reality. You can show the big picture, go deep into the details, interact with the product, or just play around. A very functional yet fascinating way of visualizing a product and its features. See!

P.P.: Music by “My Fearless Friend”. Thanks!
